I think there will be a plethora of options to choose from and it will cause much confusion, diffractions, and dichotomies in the industry. Even if one or two formats win there are so many players involved that I don't see how any one company will dominate.

ADSL, CDSL, HDSL, RADSL, SDSL, ISDN, ISDL, cable modems, software modems, 56K, (they're even talking about 100K modems), blah, blah, blah

What a headache...

(BTW, my cable company said I have to wait another 2 years for cable modems)
