Turkish diplomats are lashing out against Germany and against German Chancellor Angela Merkel, after Berlin blocked moves that would have advanced Turkey's efforts to join the European Union.

Turkey's E.U. minister Egemen Bagis told reporters Thursday that "if Mrs. Merkel looks into it she will see that those who mess about with Turkey do not have an auspicious end."

The German Chancellor on Monday had described herself as "appalled" at Ankara's heavy-handed response to demonstrations protesting the Islamist government of Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Turkish police used tear gas and spray cannons against the protesters, and the unrest has left five dead and thousands injured. The government also rounded up critics, and Erodgan subsequently claimed "victory" over the protesters.

The European Union has called for an investigation into the violence.

It is unlikely that darkly threatening the duly elected leader of Germany for "mess[ing] with Turkey" will mollify Berlin's concerns over the seriousness with which Turkey approaches multilateralism and democracy.
