It was an internal Hitachi 1.5TB and I think there was a firmware issue with the drive, but I lost the partition for it during the attempted clone and had some difficulty partitioning the drive after that, but did. Actually I have 2 of the Hitachi 1.5TB drives, but since they weren't compatible with True Image, I was unable to use them as OS drives. Ultimately, I took the drives out of 2 external Western Digital 500GB MyBooks and replaced them with the 1.5TBs. As far as the Acronis True Image 2013 though, I'm sympathetic that the 1.5TBs were peculiar. Acronis cloning and windows formatting would crash at the 1 terabyte point on a Vista system, but there was no excuse for my 500GB source drive becoming unbootable.
