But public sector and private sector jobs grew dramatically under Reagan while the former shrunk under Obama and the later has been anemic." Yes, RR was a devout Keynesian; much more so than BO. In truth, Obama is closer to Raygun than any R who was running last time. If you watch what has happened under BO, instead of listening to his words, (which turned pretty liberal in Sept, '11), one can see they are fairly close, and, I suspect that, if we line all the presidents up by ideology, we'll find Obama's left shoulder brushing Raygun's right. RR increased government employees, raised SS taxes, raised income taxes, raised corporate taxes, quadrupled the deficit while tripling the debt, and was a Keynesian who spent money like crazy to increase employment (in the defense industry). Obama decreased government employees, temporarily decreased SS taxes, has done nothing with corporate taxes, passed the Obama tax cuts despite the deficit, and has brought the deficit down every year. Raygun "I support the Brady Bill" signed gun laws in Calif. cuz he didn't want the Panthers to exercise their second amendment rights en.wikipedia.org . "Environmentalist" Raygun signed the world's first coastal protection plan and set up our air resources Board, and we get to set our own clean air standards as a result; that's why US CAFE standards follow ours. . Gay marriage wasn't an issue, but he had many gay friends in Hollywood, and one daughter says he'd be in favor.California Proposition 6 was an initiative on the California State ballot on November 7, 1978, [1] and was more commonly known as The Briggs Initiative . [2] Sponsored by John Briggs , a conservative state legislator from Orange County , the failed initiative would have banned gays and lesbians, and possibly anyone who supported gay rights , from working in California's public schools . The Briggs Initiative was the first failure in a movement... Openly gay San Francisco native and politician Harvey Milk was instrumental in fighting the measure, and opposition from a variety of public figures from California Governor Ronald Reagan to President Jimmy Carter helped to defeat it. Public opinion swung fairly quickly from general support of Proposition 6 to what became overwhelming opposition. en.wikipedia.org RR was harder on corps than Obama has been. In the mid-1980s, President Ronald Reagan overhauled the tax system after learning that G.E. — a company for which he had once worked as a commercial pitchman — was among dozens of corporations that had used accounting gamesmanship to avoid paying any taxes. "I didn’t realize things had gotten that far out of line," Mr. Reagan told the Treasury secretary, Donald T. Regan, according to Mr. Regan’s 1988 memoir. The president supported a change that closed loopholes and required G.E. to pay a far higher effective rate, up to 32.5 percent. slate.com
