Good debaters can argue either side of the question, so belief in the topic is hardly necessary. The emphasis is on organizing your thoughts and giving an effective presentation. I remember this from high school and also remember that the types who got into this were and are still ready for an argument many, many years later. It is only the argument they live on, and not consequence. Like in army-training, who needs belief? Programming is only for action and performance. I suspect most of them become lawyers, politicians or both. Technology and law will finish us all off, while we talk about it online.
