You're exactly right.

I think if the truth were told, relatively few people can honestly claim to have NOT used some kind of racially tinged language in the last 30 years. Even by accident.

While working at my second job, a professional consulting firm, I used a phrase I'd heard all my life without even giving it a moment's thought. I immediately knew I had said something as everyone in the room looked up at me at once. But I honest-to-God had no idea why. It was only later when the girl sitting next to me informed me that some people thought that was an inappropriate remark; after giving it some thought, i understood why, but prior to that, I'd never had anyone question it. Today, of course, I would not use that phrase under any circumstances.

You just can't go around judging people based on what amounts to dialect that is 30 years old. The entire vernacular changes that often.
