The real surprise is the decision move dead-wood into marketing, one the most seriously challenged parts of their business -- the others being product development, customer support and sales. Which company is conspicuously absent here:

The SDK's infrastructure components [Novell's] include Java Virtual Machine v1.13, Java Developer's Kit v1.13, a Just In Time Compiler, an , trader technology, a GUI server, and Client32 DLLs. The framework components consist of Java servlets, database access through JDBC, naming and directory services through Java Naming and Directory Interface and JavaBeans.

Developers will be able to develop server-based Java applications using Web Server and NetBasic scripting. OSA also will support a number of third-party development tools such as Symantec's Visual Cafe, Penumbra's Super Mojo, VisualAge for Java from IBM and Sun Microsystems' Java Workshop.

It just surprised me that after filling so many key positions with non-Borland people, he should suddenly change tack and promote from within a couple of people strongly associated with the ancien regime.

David,

Have you ever picked up an Apple from the fruit container. Sometimes, you get one that you have to cut a portion out and throw away. But the rest is perfectectly edible, perhaps delectable. Could this analogy also hold for a business enterprise undergoing change?

Sam

David,

I disagree with none of your observations in theory. It was just the
inconsistency that caught my eye, nothing else. It may be overly sensitive
on my part, but things at Borland cannot yet be described as "business
as usual", and these appointments strike me as being somewhat
complacent.

I don't think you are overly sensitive. It always pays off to be
vigilant from our part.

Yes, it was a good sign that he filled so many key positions with
non-Borland people. Also I agree with Rod that "specific and manifest
are superior." However running business is not that simple these days.
ei, we often run into situation that we need a good staff who understands tech and marketing, or old and new business or hardware
and software aspects. Once we have "specific and manifest" talent, we
also need right amount of "garden variety talent" to be the learder in
this market.

Let's hope Yocam is not complacent yet. His work just started.

regards,

BPP
