I see your point. Most religious scripture does say to "Fear God" but I think there is a lot of ignorance about what that means. Personally I don't fear some wrathful external power. I fear violating principles of decency and my own conscience and figure sins to be those things I could do which are self destructive and against the well being of my soul.
