They could have the brokerage hold them in safekeeping, which is physical delivery of a certificate in your name to the brokerage, but actually held in the firm's vault. The great thing about this is there is never a question about the certificate's negotiability, in a pinch, because you have never touched it.

It's amazing that Riley has never picked up on this. I've mentioned it more than once.
