Areas like Paradise near Chico also are affordable. Don't know how long that lasts as there are millions of us are California dreaming. This humid tropical climate for nine months a year is the pits..

Chico is inland.......probably a 100 miles from the coast. Very hot summers albeit dry.......very little if any relief from the coastal winds. Why the coastal areas are so desirable is because of the sea breezes. The Pacific is much cooler than the Atlantic. At nite its not unusual for the fog to roll in and cool things off even in the summer. And even if the fog doesn't come in, the inland heat will pull in the sea breezes on most days, cooling things off. To see how that works.......the temp in Santa Monica which is right on the coast can be 65º on a particular day; DT LA which is maybe ten miles away from SM will be at 85º while the Valley which is another ten miles away may be at 105º. Its nearly the perfect climate IF you live east of the Hollywood Hills.........or east of the first range of mts/hills. The inland areas also suffer from a lot of smog.

Because of this particular climatic dynamic.......the fog and the sea breezes.......which is symptomatic of a Mediterranean climate, a fairly rare one in the world...........CA gets 10% of its precipitation from fog........a fact I found pretty amazing. Once again, the true golden state is that roughly 50 mile wide strip of land that runs along the coast from north to south.
