Druss, since your first documentary about Lee Cooper, I have sent out letters requesting information about him during his early years. Here is one I received from a former employer.

Mitch,

I am proud to have had Lee work for me. He always was the smart one. He was one of the few here in the Arbukles that ever learnt to read (and I think he could write too, but I'm not sure). One day I saw him reading a book when he should've been working, so I got on his case. He told me that the book he was reading (Mark Twain, or something like that) would help him get more done without even working hard. I didn't believe him, but he proved me wrong.

Later that day, he started to paint the fence out back. He was singing and whistling and having a good time. Soon he attracted the attention of the other employees. They were wondering why he was having so much fun painting this fence. He not only convinced them to paint that fence for him, but they paid him 50 cents each for the priviledge. That's why I think Lee is a clever boy.

I would have thought he was even more clever if painting fences was part of his job, instead of changing oil. We had customers lined up around the block waiting for their oil change, and Lee and all the rest of the employees were painting that damn fence. It wasn't even our fence! The fence was part of the greasy spoon next door. I was plenty ticked at Lee, but I gotta admire how clever he was.
