Steve, it sure is amazing to think back on how far the industry has come since the 80's. Back then, 50 clients on an HP3000 was doing pretty well. People didn't even consider PC's important then because there was no software to speak of. Software, by todays standards, was crude. I only had a few dealings with the MRP system you mentioned and I sit back and laugh about it now. But it's working with bright companies like CPQ and people like yourself that help the industry progress through those little learning episodes.

It's clear to me that HP and CPQ are stronger together than apart. HP has gone on record as saying they want to be number one but I, personally, don't think it's all that important (as far as PC's are concerned). What IS important is being one of the top three who control a majority of the market.

If there are more than three it becomes an unstable situation where each company has to fend off competition from a plethora of players. It forces you into a continual defensive posture where you might make decisions that are wrong. But with three solid players who all respect each other the industry is stable and all three can go on to prosper.

I'm glad that HP and CPQ have a history of working together and I hope it continues on a friendly basis.
