Which just goes to show how preconceived ideas can limit our ability to see the truth. As an existentialist, as opposed to a nonexistentialist, which is the silliest thing I ever heard of--I mean-how can I not exist?--I should have recognized Norton's statement as the desperate utterance it was-indeed-I believe he was trying to explain the meaning of life which had suddenly been revealed to him. And was trying to say non possum quin exclamen! which means, as you know, "I can't help shouting out". Or "I can't tell Freddy anything" (quin being the Latin breve form of Quinnelly) but was so overwhelmed by the emotion of the moment he couldn't complete the thought. And Gaugie failed to respond to this urgent plea for emotional connectivity, which is unusual, he's usually so perceptive, so we still don't know what the Great Truth was. Norton's despair was caused by the realization that no one has grasped this Great Truth or else-of course, it would have appeared on tee-shirts, as all great truths do-like "S**t happens" and "Just do it" and he was alone in the universe with his knowledge.
An existential dilemma if ever there was one.
