You need to watch this talk by Douglas Blackmon on what it was like in the South for African Americans after Reconstruction: Part of my argument is that the treatment of slaves would have been better if the civil war had not happened (after all the slave owner had a vested economic interest in keeping his slaves healthy and productive), as opposed to what did happen---so any detailed depiction of harsh treatment of the newly freed men post civil war supports my premise I think,.
