The going rate for a service to convert a Hi8 tape to digital is $7-10 a tape. I have about 100 tapes, which is a $700 job if I outsource it. If I can't find a friend with the right Sony Digitial 8 camcorder to borrow/buy, I'll get one on eBay or Craigslist for about $100.

In your case you could buy/borrow any old Hi8 camcorder ($50 range) and try again. But... going through USB is really slow given it's a shared resource on your PC. Firewire is dedicated and faster, which the Digital 8 devices all have. A Firewire cable should be under $10. Even better, the conversion takes place using the camcorder hardware so there's no drain on your computer CPU while you are doing this.
