We're very aware of many limiting factors Augustine was under, his first loyalty to the inerrancy of the Bible & sticking to upholding the creation story in the OT. But we've seen how reliable the OT is for historical reporting, ala your Egyptian Moses and all those fertility goddesses they were worshipping right up to 550bc that Moses had supposedly stopped the worship of 1400yrs earlier. As for 6000yr old earth, what do you think, up until Einstein's age many thought the universe was only 2mil yrs old but we see certain truths of the world evolution of life in the continuum of time from creation , already, sitting as kernels of thought in some human minds . Sciences of taxonomy & animal classification had already begun centuries earlier as very thoughtful & observant men widened their fields of experience themselves ,keeping records, making observations.
