If we are too dumb, then politicians and regulators are also too dumb, and we shouldn't trust them with as much power.

In any case that's silly. Its not a matter of stupidity in many cases, its a matter of since government is handing out favors, everyone tries to get the favors to go their way. When it is stupidity (or really more foolishness), its mostly a matter of the government deciding to do to much.

There are some things we pretty much have to have government do. There are others that it might do an ok job on. It should focus on those categories. Expanding beyond them causes multiple problems, not even considering the loss of freedom. It pushes government in to areas where it is ill suited and doesn't do well, while at the same time taking attention and funds away from its core responsibilities.
