Research into quantum computing has been underway since at least the early 70s and research continues. It has a very, very long way to go before a commercially feasible product is created. You and I won't be around when that happens.

There's one other thing the Chinese have and that's CORRUPTION. Their Party Leaders and Politicians and and Corporate Chieftains are SO corrupt that we may see a Chinese Spring in the not too distant future. You're right about them gaining on us and maybe soon to pass us, but I seem to remember hearing the same things about Japan in the 1980's. If they can keep things together and continue building their economy then they WILL pass us and THEY will be THE power of the 21st Century. But they've got a LOT of structural and political difficulties to overcome before they can take the mantle as THE World's Leader.
