More population (in the world with freer trade, in a nation if international trade is limited), allows for more specialization and trade, and also more minds to think up new ideas. As long as population isn't growing too fast, or exceeding the growth in capital by too much, its more of a good thing than a bad. (Which doesn't mean it has no negatives, just that there are strong positives as well.)

California has plenty of space per person. As a state it isn't overcrowded. Areas are relatively crowded because they are more desirable, but its not like the state would benefit from those areas having a population crash.
