Jim, most people KNEW blacks were human beings in 1840. That is why some more enlightened souls taught some of them to read, had serious romantic relationships with them, trusted them to care for their children, and even participated in political campaigns to free them. People in the South knew they were human beings, also. They simply needed cheap labor in the agrarian economy they had. It is very easy to justify continuing to do something that is already being done--conservatives do that all the time.

Political and economic expediency govern most behavior much more than idealism or doing what is ethically right does, as I am sure even you must have observed.
