I believe what the judge was saying to GZ, when questioning him directly re testifying, was "if you are convicted I will throw the book at you... So now is your chance to speak up b4 I give you the max".

GZ could have said:

This trial which could imprison me for the rest of my life is not over. I will reserve my right to testify until such time as consul and I determine if its appropriate. The Court asking me prior to that time is not fair to me.

I noticed yesterday that GZ answered several questions from the Judge..."Yes Sir"
