CoolDVD system set for February

By David Morgenstern (david_morgenstern@macweek.com)

E4 last week said it expects to ship the Mac version of its CoolDVD package in February. The company had originally planned a September 1997 release for the Digital Video Disc player.

CoolDVD will comprise a SCSI drive and PCI-based hardware decoder board. While the Intel-standard PC version is expected to cost $499, the company said the Mac model is yet unpriced and may cost more, depending on the premium OEM manufacturers place on drives with a SCSI interface.

John Chan, director of product marketing, said both Mac and PC versions were delayed by recent changes in the DVD specification. The release of the Mac package was further delayed by the slow introduction of SCSI versions of DVD mechanisms and driver support for very large volumes.

CoolDVD will use a drive from Pioneer New Media Technologies Inc. and require a Mac system with a 120-MHz PowerPC 603e or greater, Chan said. The package will offer MPEG and MPEG-2 video playback and handle CD-ROMs.

"What does this say about the state of affairs of ZitVA though?"

Nothing.
