Iraq's threat to Iran, to the extent there was one after the war with Iran ended, was essentially neutered by the Gulf War ten years before the Iraq War, and Iran has posed no threat to Iraq since. Meanwhile, the Iraq War brought about the Iran Uprisings, which certainly weakened Iran from within -- something Bush set out to do in the first place.

The region is highly unstable at the moment, and while there is a lot of internal strife throughout the region, even with the lack of stability neighbors (other than Israel) are probably safer from one another under those circumstances. And it probably isn't helpful having Iran tinkering around in Iraq. Presumably, if Iran went after Iraq at this point, we would stand behind Iraq (although, sometime I wonder with the nitwit president we have). So, the Iranian threat to Iraq is effectively zero and has been since the Gulf War.

The threat we need to be concerned with right now is Iran getting nukes, and we should prevent that from happening as it poses a huge permanent instability and greatly increases the potential for trouble. I do not believe Barack Obama is capable of dealing with that eventuality.

I also don't think it likely we'll have, in my lifetime, another president as ignorant and incompetent as Barack Obama. So, if we can get through the next few years, we should be better positioned going forward to try and do something about it.

There is a huge civil war raging in Iraq right now between Sunnie and Shia. Thousands have been killed just since April. And Iraq is aligned with Iran now.

And the Sunnie are pouring into Syria from as far away as Pakistan where the Sunnie holy warriors are turning to the new war against the Shia in the middle east.

And in concert with that, the Sunnie and Shia in the middle east, including Iraq, are fighting each other with increasing intensity.
