I see that I am here outside of my normal last mile technology discussion environment in the DSL (digital subsriber line) threads. HFC is hybrid fiber coax. The return channel in a big coax network will not work acceptably or at all for cable modems because it picks up too much noise. Therefore the network is converted into a glass fiber backbone that connects many small clusters of subscibers with the normal coax cable connection.
