Carter single-handedly destroyed the liberal Democratic Party because he showed no discipline. Sure, it was nice to have him run a 10K race with his fellow citizens. But he spent money like wildfire on just about every domestic program (except defense) and rates skyrocketed to astronomical levels. There wasn't a program Carter didn't like outside of defense. Later in his Presidency, he turned super hawkish on El Salvador, providing Reagan with the ammo to start a war with the Sandinastas.

He never got the hostages back. He played the wimpy President. He needed to try another tactic since what he was doing was not working.

Carter was in over his head as President.
