King George III had what they called the Broad Arrow Policy, which reserved all mast timber in New England for the Crown. Mast timber was hard to get, and the Eastern White Pine grew tall and straight: perfect for ships' masts. The King's men marked all suitable trees with a blaze in the shape of an arrowhead, from which the name was derived.

Unruly colonists saw that these were the best trees out there and poaching them was common. link to an explanation of the Broad Arrow Policy
