Yes, issued by US banks, except for my Italian VISA. Chase VISA isn't very happy about having my account, though, especially since I hardly ever use it.

Car rental without is, as you note, practically impossible. Checking into hotels can be a problem, too. They're essential when travelling, which is when I use them the most, as plastic isn't all taht big in Italy even now. Except, of course, for ATM cards, without which no one could manage.

Re: Non-resident country credit cards. I may be clearing out of the good 'ole US of A and this is a real problem keeping a US bank card with a foreign address. Seems it's not a legal prohibition - the issuer would just have a heck of a time collecting and using the hammer of trashing your credit rating if you decided to stiff 'em.

Not sure what I'm going to do especially when one throws in the mail transit time, but US cards seem to be quite a bit better than the foreign VISAs I was told about. That free car rental insurance is mighty nice when you roll the car off the side of a mountain in Honduras, as I did late one night in heavy fog. The only problem I've ever had with a US bank card was no one would take them in Cuba due to US banks wanting to abide by some pesky law regarding trading with the enemy.
