East Palo Alto and Palo Alto (for those who do not know are two neighboring cities separated by a highway overpass. A famous Palo Alto resident was Steve Jobs and his family. This town is teeming with millionaires and billionaires and forms the gateway to Stanford University. The city office is very efficient, the city is fully wired and it is very high tech. But less than a mile away is E. Palo Alto. It is worse than Siberia. Everybody knew where it is and nobody wanted to go and travel through there to get on the bridge to cross over into the E. Bay.

And then came our beloved Bill Clinton who surprisingly also reformed our welfare system. He gave federal grants to open clean up the city, gave incentives to Lowe's, IKEA, Home Goods etc. to open up stores in E. Palo Alto just across the Palo Alto town border. Economic incentives were also provided to restaurants like PF Chang, California kitchen etc. etc to open up stores in the shopping mall that other stores were located. And now we have a miracle happening in E. Palo Alto. All those African American and HIspanic kids are selling goods in these stores instead of cocaine on the streets. E. Palo Alto's revenues have gone up and we are seeing it reflected in the revamping of the schools and the ability of the school district to attract better teachers. The politicians those days did not sit around and blame it on the older generation for the highest crime rate in the country. They got off their butts and did something. There was no Tea Party then to tell DC "what is yours is yours and what is mine is mine."

Tejek, you and folks like Cautious Optimist and koan what I am talking about. do make it a point to visit E. Palo Alto when you visit and I bet you will not be able to recognize it. It was the buying power of Palo Alto that transformed E. Palo Alto.

This is a wonderful success story and it needs to be told along with those that America gets criticized for which no doubt is true.
