I think being or trending toward atheism is sort of pre requisite to understanding existentialism.

It is a hard concept to get. I would bet over 50% of all college professors in the US do not really understand it.

What is even weirder is the way so many "intellectuals" misuse the word existential to mean real. E.g. Iran is an existential threat to Israel.

The idea of reality is contained in the idea of existentialism, but it is not what it is.

It is a much larger realization/idea.

Nope--don't think so. Atheists follow other cultural norms--doesn't mean they don't have cultural values to which they conform--like being law abiding. Possibly if there were still outlaws living in the badlands of South Dakota--one might make a case for them I think.

Or if one owned an island not subject to any other rule then maybe one could make it up as one went along there. But if you are selling real estate in Alaska (Koan) there are all sort of cultural norms one would have to observe I would think.
