Back in the day post WW 2 our great cities were low cost, had great transportation systems giving access to many good jobs and social mobility was through the roof. I bet upward mobility today is not much greater in NYC and Boston than in Atlanta and Charlotte if you take out the black ghettos it is probably the opposite. Why mobility is much greater in SLC, Pittsburgh and Seattle is you don't have many ghettos, have lots of good jobs and cost of living not outrageous compared to a Boston or SF..
