That is all very fine and informative, but it is my perception that the way K is using the term refers to something other than the formal philosophical existentialist approach. For him, I think it means whatever the moment brings. That is the best i can discern of which he speaks. But he did refer to, I believe, of not having to observe cultural norms and it is my belief, that short of an "island" existence this would be very difficult to do in the modern world.
