Money for IR&D is better spent than for buyback. Buybacks are usually done by companies cash rich like IBM, CPQ, INTC. ASND needs to rebuild its reputation as a leader in switching technology. I don't believe the company would even consider a buyback now.

Recent proof of your point (i.e., that the money is better spent on R&D) may be the buyback announced early last week by Madge Networks. It did very little for the stock price.
