When I briefly worked for the "man" as a County park ranger, we were low paid in exchange for 'pie in the sky' retirement later on. I talked to my friend who stayed on, rose to #2 in command of the County Parks and recently retired. He has 2 over leveraged homes in Cambria, a very modest pension, and will no doubt be looking for a new job at 67 years old. OTOH, he did get to live rent free in a beautiful park on a lake near Santa Ynez for 45 years. Once the guvvie starts going after pension rollbacks in earnest, life will be just grand!
