<Mr. Short Man> - Curly, you keep pointing at Montgomery and Morgan Stanley as main shorting suspects - I still don't understand why: The numbers below were posted by NYCNPB two months ago, post 7055: <<Spectrum Institutional Stock Holding as of 9/30/97 QTR CHANGE CURRENT HOLDINGS NICH02 NICHOLAS-APPLEGATES 729306 1235534 FIDE02 FIDELITY MGMT&RES CORP 842600 1048000 GEDR GEORGE D BJURMAN & ASSOC 72470 938500 that was the 3 top holding others of interest....... MORG03 MORGAN STANLEY D WITTER 571486 654686 MONT03 MONTGOMERY HOLDINGS 0 70000 SORO SOROS FUND MANAGEMENT CO 39978 39978 MONT04 MONTGOMERY SECURITIES -13900 34800 STAT03 STATE STREET RESR & MGMT -2022000 0>> We know that the biggest jump in short position was in August-September, and I see that during this period: 1) MORG STANLEY was a net buyer (+571,486 shares) in 3Q97, and MONT sold only 13,900 shares. 2) FIDELITY AND APPLEGATE were large net buyers 3) STATE STREET THAT WAS MENTIONED AS A HOLDER OF DEBENTURES SHORTED THE STOCK, APPARENTLY AGAINST DEBENTURES There was no data shown for Needham, Fleckenstein's fund etc. Does anybody have access to Spectrum? To me, it looks that while Deanha and Hoddess did downgrade the stock, MONT and MS as a group were net buyers of CYMI during the first round of shorting. If you have some way to access the info about MONT and MS actions this quarter, please post... New fund holdings info will be out after the end of this quarter - hope somebody will get it through their brokers. Short squeze would be nice, but it looks at least 2M out of 4.5M CYMI short interest represents shorting against debentures at pretty high levels compared with current prices. Even with reduced daily trading volume, a squeeze seems unlikely for now. Good earnings and January effect should take care of Mr. Short Man. Meanwhile, CYMI keeps following SOX like a dog on a chain. Sorry for bringing up this old analysis, but questions on short interest keep popping up... Regards, Y.
