The Central Banks don't make money directly because that would be too obvious so they wrote into the law that the Federal Reserve has to turn over all their profits to the U.S. Treasury. Sounds good on the surface but there is a big problem. The Federal Reserve has the power to create massive fluctuations in the economy and they can pass that info along to their pals to make a killing, which they do. Ever see the stock market turn for no reason and then weeks later find out about a Fed policy change? Ever see a US debt downgrade that occurs yet the market sold off 2 weeks prior? Ever see a Central Bank used as a Bad Bank to buy worthless junk from others so they don't have to take the loss themselves? That's the Fed.
