Lobbyists can't give themselves or their companies the advantages, the politicians do. The lobbyists have influence but not power. The politicians use the power at the request of the lobbyists, so I'd blame the politicians far more than the lobbyists.

And you both trust that if left to their own devices they will do better?

"Left to their own devices" excludes getting special benefits from the government. Government giving out all the corporate welfare, and restrictions on competition etc. is the exact opposite of leaving the companies to their own devices, and is a step away from free markets.
