The problem is how do you get good mutations?

Mutations are like random changes to computer code ... very very unlikely to do anything useful. And for big new features, you would need a whole string of good mutations happening simultaneously.

The problem is worse for de novo genes, where new genetic coding appears with no record of slightly different versions in some other related species. De novo genetic material is found all over the place in organisms.
