In order to discuss the current system we have to recognize there are people who are genuinely in need of welfare in some form or another due to the fact that they simply do not have the capacity for personal productivity or self-care.

We have to start such a discussion with an appreciation of those who are genuinely in need, and who are being lumped in with people who are in some sort of transitory state (temporarily caught with unexpected losses of wealth or the capacity to work) and with people who are gaming the system.

We don’t want to shirk any responsibility for the first group (those genuinely in need). However, when we hinder a capable individual’s role in pursuing positive and productive roles in society by providing a welfare crutch we weaken their resolve and will for personal growth…in other words, we do more harm to them than good. The result is a population of bitter people who resent their government keepers and do not relate to the mainstream of people who are fully participating in a thriving culture.
