Keep in mind, that often corporations will do that when they feel they are turning a corner, in order to have mistakes of the past not haunt them going forward. You'll see this many times when new management has taken over the company. Huge writedowns of inventory and write-offs of receivables. I took the writedowns as a positive sign, and one of confidence among ongoing business by management.
