( BW)(MRV-COMMUNICATIONS)(MRVC) MRV Communications Announces
Jump in Market Share, and General Availability of Gigabit Switching

Business Editors

CHATSWORTH, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 8, 1997--MRV Communications, Inc.
(NASDAQ:MRVC) announced that recently released IDC Market Share Survey in LAN Switching
indicates a strong gain in MRV's market share, for the first-half of 1997.
According to IDC, MRV's NBase Switching division share in workgroup switching segment
increased from 3.8% in 1996 to 4.6% in the first-half of 1997. Noam Lotan, the company's
President and CEO commented, "This impressive 21% gain in six months confirms the growing
acceptance and the rising visibility of MRV's High Speed Switching solutions." Lotan added, "We
focus on High Speed enterprise Switching technology and are pleased to confirm today the
general availability of our all-port Gigabit Ethernet Switch, the GFS 3012, aiming at the high-end
"bandwidth-hungry" corporate and ISP backbones."
The GFS 3012 is a 3 slot chassis-based device, featuring up to 12 switched Gigabit Ethernet
ports, while supporting up to 64 ports of any combination: Ethernet, Fast Ethernet and Gigabit
Ethernet. Key features include: Quality of Service for Multimedia applications, Protocol and
Policy-based VLANs, Layer 3 Switching, Port Trunking and Power Redundancy. In addition, the
GFS 3012 has extensive management capabilities, including Web-based management, RMON
support and multiple-platform management. Web-Based management allows access to the switch
from popular internet browsers such as Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Explorer.
In addition to MRV's patent pending DirectIP Layer 3 Switching, MRV intends to integrate
Hardware Layer 3 Routing into the device.
Separately, MRV announced that despite uncertain economic conditions in Asia-Pacific, the
company is encouraged by its current prospects in the region. MRV's business in Asia-Pacific
accounted for approximately 14% of total revenues in the past quarter, derived mostly in Japan and
Korea.
MRV is a leading manufacturer of high speed network switching and fiber optic transmission
systems which enhance the performance of existing data and telecommunications networks. The
company designs, manufactures and sells two groups of products: (I) computer networking
products, primarily high speed LAN switches and (ii) fiber optic components for transmission of
voice, video and data across enterprise, telecommunications and cable TV networks.
The company's advanced networking solutions enhance the functionality of LANs by reducing
network congestion while allowing end users to preserve their legacy investment in pre-existing
networks and by providing cost-effective migration paths to next generation technologies such as
Gigabit Ethernet. The company's fiber optic components incorporate proprietary technology which
delivers high performance under demanding environmental conditions.
