Deeno, I think you are right - both reading and screening should complement each other in seeking attractive businesses to invest in, rather than just employing one approach over the other. I think an additional downside to screening tools is the quality of the underlying data used. Some tools can give totally misleading results that are only discovered once further research is performed.

I have found finviz.com, Google Stock Screener (recently improved) and the FT's Stock Screening tool to be quite useful (and free!) tools. I also read Gurufocus, Seeking Alpha and various blogs for ideas, as well as the numerous mainstream and less prominent financial news sites. As you might expect, the less prominent ones often produce some more interesting leads.

Personal contacts can be a good source, alas I find that there are not too many that have generated meaningful ideas to date.
