For the record, going without insurance and signing up on the way to the hospital won't in fact work, at least for portions of the year, although its a bit murky to me. There are open enrollment periods, the 1'st one will be from Oct1, 2013 through Mar or Apr of 2014. You must enroll during this period for pre-existing conditions not to ding you. After that, pre-existing conditions aren't covered, unless you wait to unroll in the next open enrollment, which will be Oct-Dec 2014. At least that is the case through the exchange (which means you are getting subsidized). If you go straight to the insurance co., I don't have a straight answer on what happens.

Further, what happens if you move into Oregon during a period of closed enrollment? You are stuck with pre-existing conditions until the next open enrollment?? Sounds nutty to me.
