Hyundai, KBS Develop Digital HDTV System

December 8, 1997 (SEOUL) -- Korea Broadcasting
System (KBS) and Hyundai Electronics Industries Co., Ltd.
jointly developed Korea's first digital high definition television (HDTV)
system, a Hyundai spokesman said.

Digital broadcasting, scheduled from the year 2000 in Korea, will have
high audio and video quality as well as multichannel and other features.

Hyundai and KBS spent two years to develop the digital TV codec,
which boasts improved resolution with 1,920 x 1,080 pixels, five times
more than conventional satellite TV systems.

In addition, its transmissible data band ranges from 18Mbps to
40Mbps, capable of receiving signals from both 34Mbps satellite
broadcasts and 19.3Mbps terrestrial digital broadcasts.

The HDTV also is equipped with an application specific integrated
circuit chip developed by KBS that helps transmit high-speed audio
and video signals, the spokesman said.
