This is why I think hedonics suppression of the inflation numbers through the theory of substitution is just plain bullshit. If we really cared about lifting everyone's standard of living, then we wouldn't play games like that. A pinto is not a mercedes. And a chicken substitute is not chicken.

First, chicken prices are up primarily because feed prices are up because of adverse weather. Shit happens. Secondarily they are up because demand is up because we're in a recovery; a good thing. The prices are not up because of interest rates, that's insanity.

Second yes people respond to price signals. They will switch from chicken if it gets too expensive. Econ 101. I imagine your spendthrift wife will even switch to another protein.

Third, why the hell are you shopping at Walmart or Target for food? Yuck! Your $7 chicken is probably imported from God knows where and fed God knows what chemicals and hormones. As a card carrying member of the 1% you should lecture your wife on priorities, like living to enjoy your retirement.
