>> He gave Iran gave Iran a good reason to develop WMD's.

The answer of the Left is "MAD -- it worked during the Cold War, right?"

Ronald Reagan recognized the futility and stupidity of MAD and set about to secure a meaningful reduction of nuclear proliferation. Sometimes I think no one else remembers it, but in the mid-70s, the rallying cry of the Left was "Stop Nuclear Proliferation."

The Left's nemesis, Reagan, was the guy who finally did something about it, by recognizing that MAD was an absurd approach to dealing with the problem. He thought it was utterly stupid and recognized that the only solution was to make it untenable for the USSR to continue its weapons competition with the US. And he ended it without nuclear disaster.

Was Iran going to sit still while Saddam re-instituted his nuclear weapons programs (which indisputably was his objective)? If anything, the IAEA inspection regime in Iraq gave Iran precisely what it needed -- breathing room -- to further its own nuclear programs.

It is somewhat humorous to me how one of these talking-point concepts, like "Iraq was a buffer for Iran", is spouted by some liberal and it just spreads like wildfire, forever established in the left wing vernacular as though it were a "truth".

Saddam was the mortal enemy of Iran.

They fought an 8 year war.

Saddam was a secular Sunni and Iran was (and is) a religious Shiite fundamentalist state.

Iran didn't really SPEED UP their nuclear program until WE invaded Iraq.

That's another point for George W.......
