WEB TV competition? Curtis Mathes Holding Corporation Becomes uniView Technologies Corporation; New Company First in Industry to Offer Total Custom Set-Top Box Solutions Business Wire - December 08, 1997 07:01 %CURTIS-MATHES %UNIVIEW CRTM %TEXAS %COMPUTERS %ELECTRONICS %COMED V%BW P%BW DALLAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 8, 1997--Dallas-based Curtis Mathes Holding Corporation (NASDAQ:CRTM) Chairman Patrick A. Custer announced today a complete restructuring of the company into two divisions and a corporate name change to "uniView Technologies Corporation." "This change," said Custer, "is the next step in solidifying the planned evolution of the company from a consumer electronics company to an advanced technology designer, developer and service provider." The name change will take effect upon shareholder approval. As a result of the company's divisional restructuring, a new Technologies Division will contain the uniView(TM) and uniView Xpressway(TM) technology, and a new Curtis Mathes Division will contain the Curtis Mathes brand name, and will concentrate on strategic alternatives designed to maximize its return on the name. Under the uniView Technologies umbrella the company will continue the development and implementation of innovative hardware technologies and solutions that can be licensed to other companies for a variety of niche applications including home, education, banking, hotel, and home office, among others. By combining its hardware solutions with technology expertise from the uniView Xpressway, the company becomes the first in the industry to provide an end-to-end solution tailored for specific needs and requirements. "We will not plan to compete with our customers for major shelve space," said Custer. "In particular, there are numerous consumer electronics, medical and hospitality companies that are looking for the right convergence solutions, but have not found an existing set-top box to meet all their customer demands, nor do they have the expertise or capacity to develop their own technology," said Custer. "We have established the world's first and only company that can deliver custom 'one-stop shopping' set-top box solutions from evaluation to execution, while others in the category can only offer separate elements." Products utilizing the uniView technology are the only "all-in-one" devices in the market that combine television, telephone and Internet access functions through a television set. Other products on the drawing board continue to add innovative consumer-friendly features. "Technology is limited today only by a lack of imagination and we have a management and engineering team that brings a wealth of experience in design for understanding customer needs," Custer said. Because Internet boxes are only as good as the information routed through them, uniView Xpressway will continue to provide customized Internet access and on-line services for TV-based systems. "In addition to our ongoing quest for engineering talent, we will also seek to augment our Board of Directors by recruiting two highly qualified persons with high-tech backgrounds," said Custer. UniView Technologies Corporation has established an advanced standard for connectivity to Internet appliances by adopting leading technology from Sun Microsystems, Inc., MCI Telecommunications Corp., and Cisco Systems, Inc. It also has developed proprietary software enabling users to access the unique features of uniView. UniView Technologies Corporation is a Dallas-based electronics engineering design and marketing company. The company also specializes in advanced television solutions, as well as other new interactive and connectivity technologies.
