Religious thought is more like to cause the use of weapons of mass destruction than prevent anything. People fight more about religion than almost anything else.

One could argue that the tenets contained in the Religious thought of humans is an evolutionary development of the human brain designed to modify human biological behavior and evolved just in time to negate the effects (hopefully) of weapons of mass destruction.
