I feel we were justified using them at the time. My feelings have changed on that issue since I read this book:

The entire of Japanese society were prepared to become Kamikazis if we invaded, we had been so demonized by their leaders. The bombs stopped all of that in it's tracks. We also needed an actual demonstration of the bomb to prevent the Soviets from over-running all of Europe, which they might well have done.
