I have two clients that have basement apartments here in Seattle that rent them out through VRBO. Both are happy with VRBO and one tells me he makes as much as $2000 a month.

We did this with our place on Hilton Head for many years...but we were lucky to have a relative close by who helped us out for beer and peanuts....however, all those concerns you stated are there.....and you would be surprised that if you are careful to verify the guests and get a decent deposit....problems are minimal. Over a dozen years we only had two significant incidents.
