I don't know much about Meier, but agree totally about Jobs.

There is a time and place for being a jackass and one of those times is when you have a record of success.

I would say it is okay to be a jackass sometimes when you're the most knowledgeable guy in the room. But there are times when you have to defer to others' knowledge and judgment. I think this is where Obama has really hurt himself.

Sometimes it comes across as "arrogance", but I think your description of just being a jackass fits better. We're all jackasses at times, but it if you're trying to work with other people it is usually counterproductive.
